Believing that Jesus is both God and Man

Here’s a big word for little ears, INCARNATION! That word is very important to us because it means that God humbled Himself and became human, just like us. He left His throne in Heaven and put on flesh to come into the world just like we did. “He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin, Mary.” (The Apostles’ Creed)

Jesus lived a human life but did not possess the sinful ways all humans have. Adam’s sinful nature was not transferred to Jesus like it was to us. His relationship with God was not broken because he and His Heavenly Father were one. “As a man, God experienced the same temptations that we feel. He suffered the same kind of physical pains that we suffer with. He also experienced emotional pain. He was ignored, unappreciated, unloved, misunderstood, and even despised—even though he did nothing wrong, and always loved everyone.”[1]

Jesus came to earth to bring people back to God and to save them from the punishment they would have to endure at the end of their life on earth, separation from God forever.

Since Adam and Eve broke their love relationship with God, the only way that things could be made right again was through the blood of an innocent sacrifice. Back in Bible time, God’s people sacrificed animals as a way of saying they were sorry and asking God for forgiveness. But the sacrifice never changed their hearts and they just kept on breaking God’s law of love.

Jesus was the final, perfect sacrifice that satisfied forever the punishment for Adam and Eve’s sin. His human body allowed Him to shed the blood necessary to pay the price to fix our broken relationship with God. No other human being could do that because He alone was innocent. He alone was sinless.

[1] Is Jesus a Man, or is He God? (January 10, 2017)

Here’s what I shared with the dancers this past week…

I showed the kids two pictures, one of Jesus depicted as a man and one of Him depicted as God.

I asked the kids the following questions:

If Jesus was just a man what about Him would be true?

1. He was a good teacher, a courageous prophet, and a compassionate and righteous man.

2. He would be a sinner and have a broken relationship with God, just like us.

3. He could die for us, but his sacrifice would not satisfy the punishment for Adam and Eve’s sin in us. So we would still be separated from God.

If Jesus is just God what about Him would be true?

1. He is holy and perfect and, as hard as I could try, I could never please Him and I would be separated from Him forever.

We need Jesus to be both God and man. He is the only way back to the Father.

An Object lesson

I showed the dancers two erasers, one was dirty and the other was brand new. The job of a good eraser is to remove mistakes so well that no one can tell that a mistake was even made. Erasers give you the chance to start over again. Let’s say that Jesus is like an eraser and that sin is like the mistakes we make.

I showed the dancers a piece of paper with a math problem gone wrong written on it.

“If Jesus was just a man, He would be like this dirty eraser. He could try to erase our sin, but He would not be able to do it, just like this dirty eraser makes smudges all over my mistake.

But because Jesus was a sinless man and the Son of God, like this clean eraser, He can remove our sin and He gives us the chance to start over again with Him.

The Word in Motion

The dancers worked on expressing Philippians 2:6-11 in movement.

"Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death -

even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Here’s what The Word of God says

"There is only one God. And there is only one way that people can reach God. That way is through Jesus Christ, who is also a man. Jesus gave himself to pay for the sins of all people. Jesus is proof that God wants all people to be saved. And that proof came at the right time." 1 Timothy 2:5-6 International Children’s Bible (ICB)

Family Time

The Scripture verse above it a great one to have hidden in your child’s heart. Check out Pinterest for some great Bible memory games.

God in Flesh and Blood is a great song to add to your Worship Time with your family.
